Driver suspected of DUI in crash that killed 86-year-old in Stockton
A suspected drunken driver killed an 86-year-old man in a crash in Stockton early Sunday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
Just after 2 a.m., a 29-year-old driving a 2012 Toyota Camry was traveling in the #2 lane of southbound Interstate 5, near Turner Road, when he struck another vehicle, CHP said.
According to the CHP, the Camry driver had been traveling at a high rate of speed when he struck a 2003 Honda Civic from behind. The crash caused the 86-year-old Civic driver to veer off the roadway and overturn down the embankment.
The Civic came to a rest on its roof, while the Camry spun and came to a rest in the #2 lane and the west shoulder of I-5.
First responders arrived at the scene to provide aid, but the 86-year-old died at the scene.
The CHP said the driver of the Camry was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI.
