Dozens Homeless After Apartment Building Fire In Downtown Stockton
STOCKTON (CBS13) - Crews fought a massive 4-alarm fire at an apartment building in the downtown Stockton area Tuesday morning.
The scene is at the Mayfair Apartments along N. El Dorado Street.
Stockton Fire crews responded a little before 7:30 a.m. and found heavy smoke and fire showing through the roof of the building. Firefighters battled flames on the third, fourth and attic space of the building.
Residents safely evacuated from the building, firefighters say. One resident had to be carried down from the fourth floor. About 15 people were evacuated from the building, crews say.
Part of the roof of the building has collapsed, firefighters say, but crews were in a safe position and are OK.
Crews are currently doing secondary searches of the building to make sure everyone made it out safely.
Investigators are at the scene, but it's unclear at this point what caused the fire. It's too early to say if the fire is suspicious, firefighters say.
Stockton Fire later revealed that two firefighters suffered minor injuries in the battle. One county firefighter suffered heat exhaustion, while a Stockton Fire member had some ceiling plaster fall on his head. Both were taken to the hospital and are OK.
