Dog Dragged Behind Car During Burglary

DAVIS, Calif. (CBS13) – Police are searching for a suspect who allegedly dragged a dog for several blocks while trying to escape during a burglary.

Matt Sullivan, the homeowner, said he stumbled upon the suspect as the unidentified man was loading valuables and electronics into his SUV.

The suspect immediately jumped into the driver's seat and stepped on the gas, forcing Sullivan to dodge away, the victim said. When Sullivan turned around, he said he saw that the leash on his 15-year-old dog Ivy got caught underneath the bumper, dragging her along.

"She came underneath the car, appeared, and then got dragged under the rear bumper," Sullivan said. "I had already said, 'The dog is dead. The dog is gone.'"

As Sullivan spoke with police officers about the incident, they were greeted by an incredible sight: Ivy returning to the home with only some cuts and a limp. She had been dragged at least three blocks down J Street, but did not suffer any serious injury.

Ivy had been wearing a medical cone to keep her from reaching an injury, and the device had apparently borne the brunt of the damage.

Sullivan was able to give a partial license plate number to police -- the first three digits were 6CY -- and said he hopes the suspect is quickly arrested.

"I want him caught. I want him to pay for what he did," he said.

The suspect would have been facing property charges for stealing electronics, but now could face charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
