Deuce: Kap Struggles In Levi's Debut
SANTA CLARA—The 49ers opened Levi's Stadium by holding Bears running back Matt Forte to 21 yards and Jay Cutler to under 200 yards passing. That should've been enough for the win, right?
Wrong.
But they outgained their opponent 361 to 216 on offense. That should definitely be a win!
Wrong. Turnovers, flags and missed opportunities cost the 49ers in their home opener.
Colin Kaepernick threw two interceptions in the 4th quarter and the Chicago Bears scored 21 points in the final quarter to beat the 49ers 28-20. Kaepernick finished 21 for 34, 248 yards, three interceptions and a lost fumble. The Bears capitalized off the turnovers as Cutler connected with banged-up wide receiver Brandon Marshall for three touchdowns. Cutler was 5 for 5 with three touchdown passes in the 4th quarter.
Flag Football-The 49ers and Bears combined for penalties 26 penalties. San Francisco had 16 penalties for 118 yards.
What we learned:
-Frank Gore may be an old man but he still has it. Gore should've had a 54-yard TD run but it was called back because of a holding penalty on Anquan Boldin (TERRIBLE call).
-The 49ers have to clean up the penalties. They have 27 through the first two weeks of the season.
Surprising Stat of the Night-Frank Gore and rookie Carlos Hyde combined for 17 carries. Huh?
Do you kiss your mother with that mouth? Colin Kapernick was called for a personal foul for inappropriate language after Bears rookie CB Kyle Fuller picked him off early in the 4th quarter.
Injuries: Vernon Davis left the game in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury.
Off-the-field highlights:
-Former Giants slugger Barry Bonds was shown on the Levi's Stadium scoreboard screaming and fist pumping.
-The loudest ovation of the night came when Hall of Famer Joe Montana was introduced to the crowd prior to kickoff.
-Snoop Dogg performed at halftime but where was big time 49ers fan E-40?
What's next: The 49ers hit the road to take on the NFC West leading Arizona Cardinals (2-0).
