Suspect shot, killed by Sacramento County deputies on I-80 identified

The suspect shot and killed by Sacramento County deputies on Interstate 80 after a chase on Sunday has been identified.

The incident began as a domestic violence call around 10 a.m., the sheriff's office said, when deputies received calls that a woman was seen bloody and beaten while running down Zinfandel Drive near McGregor Drive and yelling for help. Deputies said she tried to gain access to homes, looking for help.

When one homeowner let her in, law enforcement showed up. The woman told them she was beaten by her ex-husband for several days, deputies said.

"Assault is an understatement," Sacramento County spokesperson Ed Igoe said. "Had violently beaten her the past three days. That includes being pistol-whipped and choked until she went unconscious."

Igoe said the woman played dead until the suspect left and then she escaped to look for help.

The victim told deputies that the suspect had a pistol and was always armed, authorities said. Deputies said they went to the victim's home, where the beatings happened, but the suspect was not there.

When deputies continued searching for the suspect, they said they located his vehicle on Fair Oaks Boulevard near Kenneth Avenue. A chase ensued, which continued on Interstate 80 and ended on eastbound I-80 near the weigh scales. This is where deputies said they shot the driver, who died at the scene.

On Wednesday, the Sacramento County coroner identified the suspect as 38-year-old William Kreuzer of Rancho Cordova.

No deputies were injured in the shooting. The sheriff's office said the deputies involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

All eastbound lanes on I-80 near the scene were closed for multiple hours.
