Deadly Sacramento Hit-And-Run Crash Brings Violent End To Valentine's Day Date
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Flowers and candles line the street near a deadly hit-and-run crash claimed the life of a young woman on Monday.
The driver turned himself in on Monday afternoon, hours after the crash on southbound Highway 99 near 12th Avenue.
Travon Wilkerson is still overcome with grief knowing he'll never see his girlfriend, Megan Hernandez, again.
"You don't know what you've got til it's gone, for real," he said.
They were on a Valentine's Day double date and driving home with two friends from dinner and a movie when their car was hit.
"All of a sudden we started sliding and we started flipping after that. once we stopped he called his girlfriend and she answers, so I call mine and no answer, just nothing," he said.
Hernandez was killed by the violent impact.
Wilkerson and his two friends were not seriously injured in the crash.
The California Highway Patrol says Rodney Thurman, 39, fled the scene on foot.
"Man, that's not cool," Wilkerson said. "You can't do that to people. It's like, what if they left you like that?"
A memorial for Hernandez now stands on an overpass near the scene of the accident. Wilkerson is surrounded by supportive family, remembering the 19-year-old who wanted to be a nurse one day.
Now Wilkerson is left only with pictures and memories of his best friend.
"It's a big part of my life and it's gone now, she's not coming back," he said.
Thurman faces felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges.
