Plan To Build Fence Along Train Tracks In Davis Sparks Protest
DAVIS (CBS13) - A massive fence to be built along a stretch of train tracks in Davis is sparking a debate. Some question whether it will save lives as promised or making things more dangerous?
Union Pacific plans to build a steel fence, eight feet tall and three quarters of a mile long near downtown Davis to stop people from crossing the rail road tracks.
Protesters came out Sunday trying to stop the project. They say the fence will cut off access to downtown and force people to walk through several of Davis' busiest intersections.
People have died on the track but Davis residents claim the fence would have prevented those deaths most of which were suicides or transients who fell asleep on tracks.
Residents claim Union Pacific may solve their problem with the $250,000 fence, but their solution will cost the city of Davis millions.
"They are going to solve their liability problem and let the city of Davis spend millions to figure out a way around what they've decided to do," said Davis City Councilman Joe Krovoza.
Union Pacific did not send a representative to the protest.
