Davis Jewelry Store Victimized By 3 Different Groups
DAVIS (CBS13) - Perfect strangers became part of an unusual Davis jewelry store heist that started with a fight.
The surveillance camera shows a couple of people fighting on the sidewalk when one of the men standing by watching suddenly walks up to the glass storefront at De Luna Jewelers, touches it with his hand, then takes two whacks with his foot. The second blow shattered the glass.
He ran off without taking anything, but within minutes, others began looting the downtown Davis shop. The heist has left store manager Adrian Blanco dumbfounded.
"You know, seven people walked by while there's broken glass in here," he said. "Everyone's on their cell phone. None of them made the call.
Call it crime by committee.
Starting at 2:40 a.m., "The fight happened. Guy decided to break the window," Blanco said.
At 3:13, "Two guys walking, they look intoxicated, said, 'Hey, broken glass. I'm gonna get that.'"
Then a 3:20, "Three girls, two guys walking. They look intoxicated and each of them decide they're going to get a souvenir."
Three separate groups, one jewelry store.
"I think a lot of people think it's someone from out of town coming in," Blanco said. "Not necessarily. It's someone from our own backyard."
The thieves took Native American pottery mostly, valued at a couple thousand dollars.
Do they have any idea what they have?
"Probably not," Blanco said. "Well, maybe they do because they picked it up and probably saw the price tag."
