CSU Evacuates Students From Japan
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- California State University is evacuating its students in Japan following last week's earthquake and tsunami.
CSU Chancellor Charles Reed on Tuesday called on staff at each of the university's system's schools to bring their students back to California. He cited concerns about the potential for shortages and increasing danger from damaged nuclear facilities.
University officials say a total of 45 students are affected. Some of them were preparing to leave for Japan and will no longer be allowed to go.
Meanwhile, the University of California has suspended programs at two universities in Japan. But UC spokesman Ricardo Vazquez says other study abroad programs in the country are still running and an evacuation has not been called for.
Stanford University officials say all 35 of their students in Japan have taken the option to return to the United States.
