Crash Involving Sac Sheriff's Deputy Shuts Major Roadway
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A Sacramento County Sheriff's deputy collided with another car while responding to a call overnight, according to authorities.
The K-9 unit was responding to a call of a possible theft around 1:38 a.m. when the deputy slammed into another vehicle on Watt Avenue at Northrop Avenue, according to Deputy Jason Ramos of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
A Subaru Impreza driven by 54-year-old Thomas Vasquez was turning from northbound Watt Avenue to westbound Northrop Avenue when it was broadsided by the sheriff's unit, according to the CHP, which is handling the crash investigation. The intersection was closed for about seven hours.
Ramos also says the cruiser did not have its lights and sirens on at the time of the crash.
Vasquez was taken to UC Davis Medical Center complaining of neck pain and possible broken rib.
The deputy was taken to San Juan Medical Center where he was treated and released. The K-9 dog was checked out by a veterinarian but was fine.
The CHP said it any recommendation of charges will be submitted to the Sacramento District Attorney's Office after it completes its investigation.
