Crane Collapses On New Bay Bridge Construction Site
SAN FRANCISCO (AP/CBS) — The California Highway Patrol says a crane fell during work on the new Bay Bridge project, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.
Television footage showed crews near the fallen crane, which apparently came down Thursday afternoon under the new eastern span under construction. A Coast Guard vessel was on the scene.
The crane was mounted on a barge in the water and was being used to remove temporary supports from under the deck of the new self-anchored suspension span when it tipped over at about 12:15 p.m., Metropolitan Transportation Commission spokesman John Goodwin said.
Bridge spokesman Andrew Gordon said officials are investigating what caused the crane to tip over and whether the new span was damaged at all.
The new eastern span is expected to open over the Labor Day weekend. It will connect Oakland to Treasure Island and replace a structure that was damaged during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
