Coroner: Quarry Rampage Suspect Shot Himself

SAN JOSE (AP) -- Authorities say the suspect in the Bay Area quarry shooting died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The report released Tuesday by the Santa Clara County coroner contradicts the account given by authorities shortly after Shareef Allman's death. Sheriff Laurie Smith had said Allman was killed last Thursday by deputies who opened fire after he threatened them with a handgun.

According to the coroner, his body had other gunshot wounds, but the self-inflicted wound was the fatal one.

The confrontation took place after a 27-hour manhunt for Allman, who allegedly opened fire at his workplace on Oct. 5, killing three and wounding six others. Authorities say Allman shot a 10th victim in a failed carjacking attempt.
