Cop Killer Suspects Accused Of Hiding Weapons In Cake

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Authorities said two brothers who are accused of killing a corrections officer tried to pass metal pieces that could be formed into weapons in a makeshift cake.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said 32-year-old Chong Vue asked a deputy in the Sacramento County Main Jail to deliver a cake from his cell to 30-year-old Gary Vue's cell.

Chong Vue used several pastries from the jail commissary to fashion the cake, but when the deputy inspected the food, he found several large pieces of metal from a missing cookie sheet stuffed inside.

"Metal can easily be fashioned, manipulated, sharpened into jail-made weapons," said Deputy Jason Ramos.

Deputies searched both brothers' cells after finding the metal and discovered a number of additional metal objects, including a makeshift shank found in a container of creamer in Gary Vue's cell.

"It might seem clever on the surface to them. We try to be a little bit smarter," Ramos said.

The Vue brothers are facing murder charges for allegedly killing corrections officer Steve Lo on behalf of older brother Chu Vue, who is already serving a life sentence for organizing Lo's murder.

The Sheriff's Department showed the makeshift weapons to the judge in the Vue brothers' trial before jury selection, and the judge granted a request to order the brothers searched before every court appearance and to keep the suspects shackled during proceedings.
