Convicted Murderer Dies In Prison Attack

REPRESA -- A man serving an 18-year sentence for murder was stabbed to death by two other inmates during an attack Friday morning at California State Prison-Sacramento.

The inmate, who was housed in the Secure Housing Unit, was participating in regularly scheduled recreation time when he was assaulted about 7:45 a.m. Medical personnel responded and pronounced the inmate dead about 8 a.m. from multiple stab wounds.

The deceased inmate was received by California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) in December 1994 after being convicted of second-degree murder in San Bernardino County. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Prison officials recovered two weapons and have identified two suspects in the homicide. Their names also were withheld.

The case is under investigation by the prison's Investigative Services Unit. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office also has been notified.

CSP-Sac opened in 1986 and houses maximum-security inmates serving long sentences or those who have had problems at other institutions.
