Comeback Couple: Homelessness Unites Diamond Springs Pair
DIAMOND SPRINGS (CBS13) – It's their first Valentine's Day together as a married couple, but their journeys to this moment weren't easy. It took homelessness to find love.
It was a budding romance that started as a friendship.
"We looked at each other and we had complete eye contact. And from that day, we were just friends, like we knew each other forever," Ken Green said.
But to get to this moment, Rebecca and Ken Green had to lose everything.
"You're homeless but you're not worthless," Ken said.
Rebecca took care of her sick mother and didn't have the time to work a full time job.
After her mom passed away in 2011, she says she was in a state of shock and battled with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Her mother being her only source of income, Rebecca soon found herself homeless at Hangtown Haven in Placerville.
"I didn't sleep for six months. I couldn't eat, I couldn't function," Rebecca said.
Fortunately, Ken was there to pick her up.
After his mother got ill and medical bills started piling up, he too found himself homeless.
"I just left. I started walking," Ken said.
Little did Ken know, his soulmate would soon walk through the shelter doors.
"She needed open arms, she needed a hug and she needed tough love to kick her into gear," Ken said.
Their relationship continued to blossom, and Ken realized he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and simply proposed.
"I said, 'I have this warm fuzzy feeling in my heart and it's not going to go away,'" Ken said.
"It was so sweet and it was just so raw," Rebecca said.
And as you already know, she said yes. They got married on Friday.
"If she had been any more beautiful, I wouldn't have even seen the dress at all. She was so beautiful," Ken said.
The two now have a home together in Diamond Springs, and look forward to spending every Valentine's Day together – and have a honeymoon in Cambria planned next week.
Ken started his own handyman business in 2014, while Rebecca works at an auto repair shop. They both continue to work with the homeless at their community church.
