Classmates Remember 10-Year-Old Killed in Gang Shooting
NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) — A 10-year-old girl gunned down in her own living room while she watched TV was remembered by her classmates on Tuesday.
Students at Village Elementary School faced the reality their classmate, Elvira Campos, wasn't coming back to school.
Ten days after her life ended as a result of gang violence in her North Highlands neighborhood, they had a chance to remember her, with notes of love scrawled on balloons and notes to the fifth-grader's family.
Lori Pols, one of Elvira's teachers, faces the challenge of explaining something incomprehensible happening to a well-liked student.
"We are open as much as we can with them," she said.
As the mourning continues, investigators insist they are working feverishly to find the two men who opened fire on the North Highlands home. Detectives believe the shooting may be related to Elvira's brother, who they say had gang ties.
But Elvira's death is just one of six shootings in this area in the past five weeks—and the third in the past 11 days.
