City Of Sacramento To Speed Up Water Meter Installations
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Sacramento will speed up the city-wide installation of water meters at homes and businesses -- hoping to beat a state-mandated 2025 deadline by five years.
City Manager John Shirey says he was motivated to accelerate metering by the ongoing drought, the worst in state history.
The Sacramento Bee reported Sunday that the capital city has about 62,000 unmetered connections, the most of any California city.
People without meters are charged a flat monthly rate for water -- about $41 for an average home. Most other California communities are entirely served by water meters that measure how much customers consume and bill them accordingly.
Under a law signed by former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, providers are required to install meters on all connections by 2025.
