CHP Officer Struck And Critically Injured By FedEx Big Rig
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- A California Highway Patrol officer was stuck and injured by a FedEx truck on Eastbound Highway 50 at 16th Street, investigators said on Saturday.
CHP spokesman Michael Bradley says the officer was outside his vehicle and attempting to move two vehicles involved in a separate traffic collision when the truck hit him at around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The officer has not been identified by the CHP, but he is a veteran officer who works out of the South Sacramento CHP office.
Four eastbound lanes of Highway 50 were closed for several hours, as well as the 13th Street and 15th street on-ramps. CHP says the driver of the big rig stopped after the accident and it is not yet known whether drugs, alcohol or fatigue played a role in the crash.
The CHP report says it was cloudy and cool, but not raining at the time of the crash.
FedEx released a written statement regarding the crash:
"First and foremost our thoughts are with the officer and others involved in this accident, and we are cooperating fully with the authorities as they conduct their investigation."
