CHP Motorcycle Officer Hurt In Crash On Sacramento Street
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A California Highway Patrol officer is recovering after he was injured in a motorcycle accident just before noon Tuesday.
"I heard a big old boom," witness Myesha Williams said.
It was a loud crash that sent a CHP officer flying through the air.
"He didn't touch the car, only the motorcycle did, and he flipped over," Williams said.
Williams saw it happen as she walked along Stockton Boulevard near Fruitridge Road.
"I called 911 and, maybe 60 seconds later, a lady came and held his head together," said Williams.
Officers say the driver of an older Mercedes pulled out of a nearby shopping center right into the path of the officer.
"It's apparent at this point that the driver of the Mercedes did not see our officer," CHP Officer Michael Bradley said.
Some witnesses reported the motorcycle may have gone around a stopped Regional Transit bus, but that is still unclear. Investigators say the officer was not using his lights or siren at the time, but likely wasn't speeding either.
"His eyes was open, but he was stiff, really stiff, then he started shaking just a little," said Williams.
The 18-year veteran was rushed to nearby UC Davis Medical Center with multiple injuries, including broken bones.
Investigators say it is still too early to say who is at fault.
"It's real early in the investigation for us to say if we're going to bring any charges against the driver," said Bradley.
The officer is expected to survive from his injuries.
