CHP Cadet Dies After 'Feeling Ill' During Training
An autopsy will be performed today on a CHP cadet who died Wednesday morning after "feeling ill" at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento during physical training last week.
Ceres resident Randy Atchison, 24, had taken part in a series of warm-up calisthenics and preparation exercises alongside more than 100 other cadets on Friday morning, and after a water break, performed a 1.8-mile endurance run.
According to reports, Atchinson sat down after the run and told instructors he was feeling ill. He was initially transported to Sutter General Hospital by ambulance on Friday and then transported to Sutter Memorial Hospital on Sunday where he was treated in the ICU before passing away Wednesday at 1:29 a.m., according to the Sacramento County Coroners Office.
The coroner's office isn't saying how Atchison died, but California Highway Patrol officials are saying that Atchison was "feeling ill" during training, but refuse to disclose details regarding the matter.
A representative of Atchison's extended family told CBS13 the cadet was in "good health".
Atchison's girlfriend, Kimberlee, posted a status update on her Facebook wall on Friday at 1:53 p.m. stating: "Randy's in the ICU… he passed out during physical training at the CHP Academy… he is very sick."
Prior to Friday, Randy updated his status on Facebook saying: " Monday October 22 at 7:30 a.m., I am owned by the CHP."
Randy recently became a new father to a daughter, Kaylee.
The CHP said they are working with the family to make funeral arrangements. It is the first time someone has died at the West Sacramento Academy since it opened in 1976, officials said.
Cal/OSHA is launching an investigation into Atchison's death.
