China Manufacturer Finishes Up Bay Bridge Work

SHANGHAI (AP) -- China's biggest heavy machinery maker says it is putting the final touches on sections of the new east span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The project is the biggest so far for the state-run giant that is expanding in the global construction market.

California outsourced manufacturing of the main parts of the bridge to Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., to save $400 million on labor and materials. Zhenhua is hoping the $6.3 billion project's success will clinch its reputation as a top builder able to meet tough safety and quality specifications.

Zhenhua is fabricating the steel girders and tower for the eastern span of the Bay Bridge. The section is being replaced to improve its earthquake resistance after a 1989 quake collapsed part of the bridge.
