Chase Bank In Elk Grove Robbed; Security Guard Fires At Suspects
ELK GROVE (CBS13) -- Two men held up a Chase Bank in Elk Grove on Wednesday morning and were fired upon by a security officer, according to police.
The two men entered the bank at 8725 Elk Grove Blvd. at about 9:30 a.m. and ordered everyone to the floor, according to Elk Grove police Officer Chris Trim. The security guard confronted one of the suspects and they scuffled before the suspects left with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The security guard then fired several times at the suspects as they fled the scene, but it wasn't clear if either suspect was hit. A witness told CBS13 it did appear that one of the shots hit the suspects' car.
"At this point we don't know if they were shot or the vehicle was shot. We are speaking with the security guard to see if he can provide us with a little more detail," Trim said.
Ed Hitchcock walked out of O'Reilly Auto Parts store in the business shopping center and saw what looked like an Old West shootout.
"I was putting wiper blades on my bus," he said. "I hear some tires squealing and this gentleman from the bank, the security guard, came running off the curb and fired four rounds at him.
"It scares you. I'm just glad he fired the rounds at the other direction, and not at me."
People at the shopping center had mixed reaction if the security guard did the right thing.
"I would think it would be dangerous to shoot," Cathy Whipple said.
"I think he was just going his job, protecting people, as long as he's trying to do his job," Raymond Prasad said.
The suspects, both black, were wearing black sweatshirts, black hats and black sunglasses. They were both also wearing gloves and both appeared to be armed with handguns. They were last seen heading west on Elk Grove Boulevard in a white Honda or Toyota.
No one was hurt in the incident.
Chase Bank declined to comment when asked about the security guard's use of force.
