Case Of Mistaken Identity Lands Local Man In Jail

RANCHO CORDOVA (CBS13) -- A Rancho Cordova man is now back home after being locked up in a case of mistaken identity.

Linell Tillman is only now getting his personal belongings back from his car that is still stuck in an impound lot after a traffic stop that left Tillman in jail two weeks ago, because his ID matched closely to a man with a felony warrant.

"The name was Furrell, and my name is Linell," says Tillman.

This is a case of mistaken identity; the same description, social security number and a date of birth that was off by one day.

"I explained to the officers about the names, that it wasn't my warrant, and I asked what name was it and he said it must have been an alias," explained Tillman.

Meanwhile, Tillman was pulled over for expired tags and did not have photo ID, proof of insurance or valid registration.

But, Rancho Cordova Police Chief Doug Diamond says his officer made the right call.

"So, there's just too much to say no it's not the same guy, so we went ahead and took him downtown," said Chief Diamond.

Tillman was locked up for a total of six hours, but police finally figured out that he was not their criminal, and had fingerprints to prove it.

Police say that Tillman may have been the victim of identity theft, which is why his social security number exactly matched their suspects.
