Cameron Park Standoff Ends With Suspect's Arrest
CAMERON PARK (CBS13) - A standoff lasting for hours ended Monday night in Cameron Park after the suspect finally was taken into custody, albeit not peacefully.
El Dorado County sheriff's deputies responded after a teen was reportedly stabbed at a home along Winterhaven Drive.
SWAT team members took Miguel Ramirez into custody after a long standoff that forced neighbors out of their homes and required a K9 to go in after Ramirez.
"This is supposed to be a nice neighborhood," neighbor Hallie Stirens said.
"We surrounded the house, asked him to come out for about three hours, tried everything we could to end this thing peacefully," Sgt Phil Chovanec said. "He didn't want to come out."
Deputies showed up at the home after receiving a 911 call that Ramirez was outside wielding a knife. Investigators found who they believe to be a teen with either a stab or slash wound from a sharp object. They say Ramirez went back inside but came outside several times throughout the standoff. Eventually they deployed the K9.
"Still combative, argumentative, using profanities and still did not want to go peacefully - still," Chovanec said.
Neighbors and the sheriff's department say they've heard Ramirez has some type of a military background, and deputies say they've had contact with the suspect before.
Neighbors call Ramirez strange.
"It's like creepy he lives here," Stirens said.
"You never know when things like this are going to happen," neighbor Karen Beckman said, "but it's kind of shocking to have this go on for so long."
The teen is reportedly doing OK. The suspect was taken to the hospital after being bitten by the canine. He's facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest.
