Caltrans Awards $250M To Public Transit, Air Quality Improvement Projects
SACRAMENTO – Caltrans has awarded nearly $250 million to the improvement of public transit and air quality across the state.
The funds will be used for 127 statewide projects to upgrade transit services, purchase eco-friendly buses, modernize transit stations and create jobs.
"These projects give Californians a viable alternative to using their cars," said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. "Public transit reduces traffic congestion and protects the environment by lowering greenhouse gas emissions."
The funding is provided by 2006's Proposition 1B, which is supplying $3.6 billion over a 10-year period to improve the state's public transit.
So far, more than $2 billion has funded nearly 900 transit projects statewide, 340 of which were completed.
