Call Kurtis: No Proof Of Purchase

All a Sacramento dad wants is a receipt for the work he had done at his house. When the company wouldn't give him one, it was time to call Kurtis.

Sometimes it's money, sometimes it's services. In this case, all he wants is a piece of paper... a receipt!

A receipt shouldn't be hard to get. So what's going on here?

Dad Tom Saechou paid a contractor to pour concrete in the backyard where he plays with his 5-year old son, Troy.

"Before we had that concrete put in, we would never go back there," says Tom.

He hired Five Star Concrete, which advertises in the PennySaver, paying more than $3,000.

After it was all done, all he wanted was a receipt, thinking he'd need it at tax time.

But he says the company ignored his calls for three months!

"Every time I call them, it just went to the answering machine," says Tom.

The company doesn't have a physical address where he can stop by.

And then another concern? These small cracks started showing up.

"There's no rebar that connects so it started cracking," says Tom.

For now, Tom is more concerned about getting that receipt.

But do contractors even have to give you a receipt?

We looked into it and according to the state agencies we checked in with, there are no laws that say they do.

We contacted Five Star Concrete. The owners explained they didn't get back to Tom because they were busy working other jobs.

But after our call, they made sure he got that piece of paper he wanted so bad!

The company also went to his house and checked the cracks, promising if they get any bigger, they'll fix them.

For now, Tom and his son are enjoying their time outside.

In the end, this project doesn't qualify for a tax write-off.

But he can use that receipt to help increase the value of his home if he sells it.

A tax preparer says if you can't get a receipt, a cancelled check will also work.

We should note there is another company called Five Star Concrete Inc. in Rancho Cordova.
