Call Kurtis Investigates: Kohl's Agrees To Pay Up to Settle Allegations of Overcharges
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Four years after our investigation first exposed a pattern of overcharges at Kohl's stores, four District Attorneys have reached a settlement with the chain. According to a news release from the Santa Clara County District Attorney's office, Kohl's has agreed to pay $488,375 in civil penalties and investigative costs tied to cases filed against the chain in Sacramento, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Fresno counties.
In a series of Call Kurtis reports dating back to April of 2009, we caught Kohl's overcharging some customers at the checkout counter. Even after Sacramento County Weights and Measures fined the store in 2008 and 2009, CBS13 found in 2010 they were still failing price scanner inspections.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney's office says investigations across the state found sales prices and discounts were not always registering in the Kohl's scanning system. While Kohl's has agreed to not overcharge customers, it did not admit wrongdoing.
