Call Kurtis: CD Maturity

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- It's been a long time since Rachele Aldridge bought this certificate of deposit.

"August 14, 1984," she remembers.

Rachele's seen a lot of changes over the last 26 years.

"I've been married and divorced since then."

She forgot all about the CD until her mom called last year.

"She goes 'I found something in the safe that's got your name on it.' She goes 'it's a CD of some sort. Do you remember it? No. Do you? No.'"

So around February of 2010 they called and talked to a teller at Bank of the West  to see about cashing it.

"And she says 'well, that's not our bank so we can't do nothin' about it.'"

It's true, the CD was issued out of Union Safe Deposit Bank, but Bank of the West took over Union in 2004.

She paid a visit to a banker at the main branch in Stockton.

"And she said she would investigate more on it and I haven't gotten more response back."

That was a year ago.

This is the first call Rachele's made on this issue in a year.

She's been patient and put the problem on the back burner.

The last time she spoke to a banker they couldn't find any record of her CD.

"They said something about me cashing it in, but they didn't have any record of it."

We talked with the bank's vice president who took Rachele's info and said she would help; she later called her.

Rachele says the VP wasn't able to find any record of the CD either.

So where's her money?

We had her check the state's unclaimed property website.

When she entered her information and clicked search: "it says no match."

So Rachele's next job is to file her claim with both the Office of the Controller of the Currency, which regulates national banks, and with the FDIC, which insures bank deposits.

A check with interest would be great; but anything would help her daughter Chelsea get a head start after high school.

"And I need the money for her college, which would be great."

We'll update you once we learn what the FDIC will do, if anything, for her.
