California Strike Disrupts Activity At Port of Oakland
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Striking custodial and maintenance workers in California have disrupted activity at the Port of Oakland.
Port spokesman Isaac Kos-Read says the workers were preventing trucks from entering the facility Tuesday morning. Longshoremen were also being kept from their jobs.
Kos-Read says six of the seven terminals at the port had waiting ships in what was expected to be a busy day in the midst of the holiday season.
Oakland International Airport workers were also part of the one-day strike and walked off the job Monday night. Kos-Read says air travel has not been affected.
The workers accuse port officials of failing to bargain for a new contract in good faith. Port officials say they're seeking only modest concessions, and the workers are well-compensated.
