California Pot Laws Still Being Left Up To Cities
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - While voters in Alaska and Oregon are deciding whether to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, the politics of pot remain local in California.
At least 13 California cities and counties have measures on their Nov. 4 ballots that seek to set rules on how medical marijuana can be grown and sold within their borders.
Medical marijuana activists in Encinitas, La Mesa and Santa Ana qualified initiatives that seek to overturn local bans on medical marijuana dispensaries.
Pot growers and users to the north in Butte, Lake, Nevada and Shasta counties are seeking to overturn newly adopted outdoor cultivation restrictions.
The measures are being considered after lawmakers failed for the fifth year in a row to agree on a way to give the state authority to regulate the state's sizable medical marijuana industry.
