California DMV Worker Charged With Fraud

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -- Prosecutors say a California Department of Motor Vehicles employee took cash to falsify computer records and issue commercial driver's licenses that had been revoked.

The Orange County Register says 37-year-old Michelle Carbajal accepted $23,000 from 12 people to alter their driver's license records showing they passed the written and driving tests. She then issued them permits.

The drivers hadn't passed any of the tests safety tests, including proper use of specialized brakes, pulling double trailers and being qualified to drive big-rigs and other commercial vehicles.

The district attorney's office says in a news release that the Fullerton woman, who was arrested Friday, faces up to 22 years in prison if she's convicted of 19 felony counts of altering public documents and 19 counts fraud.
