California Boy Dies After Falling From Cliff In Hawaii
HANA, Hawaii (AP) — A 12-year-year boy from Chula Vista, Calif., is dead after falling about 300 to 350 feet from a cliff while sightseeing on Maui.
Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga says Cristian Lopez was traveling with his family Sunday along a winding and scenic route to Hana that's popular among tourists. The family stopped at a cliff along Honomanu Bay when he fell into the ocean.
The boy was brought to shore but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Police say the family had parked their rental car at the lookout when Cristian quickly ran out and disappeared over the cliff's edge.
Mainaga says the cliff is a popular tourist spot but it's not considered an official scenic lookout. He says there's no railing on the cliff.
