Calif. To Restore Child Care For CalWORKS Families

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The state has agreed to restore child care for thousands of families following the threat of budget cuts.

Under a settlement announced Friday, advocates say the state Department of Education will find families that had been receiving child care assistance but got lost in the wake of former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto.

Child Care Law Center attorney Melissa Rodgers says Schwarzenegger created a chaotic situation for more than 56,000 children when he vetoed child care funding for parents who had transitioned off welfare but whose wages were too low to cover child care costs.

The state moved thousands of families into other state-subsidized programs, but only some came back when funding was restored.

An Alameda County judge this week signed the settlement related to the CalWORKS Stage 3 program.
