Calif. DMV Tickets Hundreds In Statewide Fraudulent Parking Placard Sweep
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The California DMV says it handed out hundreds of tickets Wednesday to people accused of using fraudulent disabled parking placards.
Investigators handed out 241 citations during the sweep that spanned several regions up and down the state, according to a department press release.
Some of the places investigators caught suspected violators were high-traffic areas such as shopping malls, universities and colleges, business districts and other areas where investigators say they get a large number of complaints.
Forty-three of the citations were handed out in the central area, which comprises Fresno, Bakersfield and Stockton, and 15 were handed out in the northern region, which comprises Roseville, Sacramento, Santa Rosa.
DMV Chief Deputy Director Jean Shiomoto warned against lending out disabled placards to others.
"Fraudulent use of disabled placards is a disservice to legitimate placard owners who really need the parking privilege," said Shiomoto. "The DMV will confiscate a placard of a legitimate owner if it's being used by others."
