Cal State U. Sees Record Number Of Applications
LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- New data shows that the 23-campus California State University system received a record number of undergraduate applications for the coming fall term.
According to figures released Thursday, the system received about 621,000 applications from freshman and transfer students, up from 617,000 last year.
The number of admissions increased to 319,000, a big jump from 282,000 last year when Cal State severely restricted enrollment because of state budget cuts.
Cal State officials say a new round of budget cuts has limited admissions for fall 2011 and could force the system to close admissions for the coming winter and spring terms.
CSU stands to lose at least $500 million in state funding in the coming fiscal year as California struggles to close another massive budget deficit.
