Cain Allows 8 Runs In Giants' 17-7 Loss To The Rockies
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Matt Cain is frustrated but confident he's still capable of pitching at a high level.
He certainly didn't Thursday.
Cain gave up a season-high eight runs, including five in Colorado's record-setting, 13-run fifth inning, and the Rockies beat the San Francisco Giants 17-7.
Cain (0-4) lost his first four decisions in a season for the first time in his career. He allowed eight runs on 10 hits in four-plus innings and did not walk a batter or strike out anyone.
"The location wasn't bad; the balls were a little higher than they needed to be," Cain said. "With a group of guys who can swing the bat as well as they can, they will take advantage."
Cain opened the season with a quality start, a no-decision, against the Los Angeles Dodgers and hasn't been able to put together consistent outings since.
"The biggest thing is to keep trusting the stuff is there," Cain said. "Keep executing and go out and have some success."
Trevor Story and Nolan Arenado homered off Cain in the fifth, and Vin Mazzaro yielded nine runs on six hits while recording just one out.
"It's hard to believe lightning hit us twice in a week," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "You hope the long man can give you some innings, but Mazzaro couldn't get out of it. It's (tough) to see the same things in a week."
The Giants became the first team to allow multiple 12-run innings within a seven-day span and Mazzaro tied a San Francisco record in allowing nine runs in a relief effort.
Gerardo Parra had two hits and three RBIs in the fifth, when Colorado sent 17 batters to the plate.
It's the most runs scored in an inning by any team since Arizona scored 13 in the fourth against Pittsburgh on April 11, 2010.
Every Rockies hitter either scored or drove in a run in the inning, including starting pitcher Chris Rusin, who singled home a pair of runs. Seven of the nine did both.
The Giants rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Rusin taken out after giving up a two-run single to Gregor Blanco.
Christian Bergman (1-3) came on to throw 2 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out three, to get credit for the win.
Buster Posey had two hits and drove in two. Matt Duffy collected three hits, Denard Span doubled twice, singled and drove in a run. Brandon Crawford and Mac Williamson also had RBIs.

Giants: IF Joe Panik (groin) may return to the starting lineup as early as Friday, a week after tweaking his groin in a game against the New York Mets.
