Buy It And Try It: The Houdini Corkscrew

At 58 Degrees and Holding wine store and bar they've got lots of wine. They sell 58 wines by the glass.

Behind this secure door a cellar kept at 58-degrees with storage lockers are rent out. And in the store they've got the rare stuff. "This is our reserve room so it has all kinds of treasures," said Ian Smith of 58 Degrees.

Like a bottle that's more than 40-years-old. But on this day, we won't crack open one of these reserve bottles. Instead, they've agreed to trade in their good old-fashioned wine opener to test a device on a few more practical vintages. "It's cool looking, it's modern," said Smith.

The Houdini Corkscrew claims to work like magic. "Push down, pull up, and presto, the cork is out of the bottle," said Smith.

But is it that easy? Manager Jeff Back tries it out, finding a white wine that doesn't have a very good cork. "We've experienced this one falling apart quite often," said Back.

First he uses the foil cutter that comes with the Houdini to slice the foil away.

Kurtis Ming: How'd that work for you?

Jeff Back: Very easy.

But now to the true test. He pushes down, pulls up, and the cork is out of the bottle.

Kurtis Ming: What do you think?

Jeff Back: Easy use.

He admits, he had to balance a bit. But overall it works. Just to be sure, he tries it on a second bottle. "It kind of makes wine opening fun," said Back.

We take a third bottle to some young women enjoying a girls day out. When we hand Brandi Rocha the Houdini she seems a bit intimidated. "I don't even have text messaging," said Rocha.

But she manages to work it. "Presto, I think my little wine opener is better," said Rocha.

Sure it works but she thinks it's too big, and doesn't do the job much better than the old fashioned corkscrew. Her friend Sarah agrees. So for anyone considering buying it here's the best advice from 58 Degrees. "It's worth a try," commented Back.

We bought one online for only $29.99, it comes with a five-year warranty. If anything, it's a conversation piece.
