Buy It And Try It: Rotato Express

Corti Brothers has been offering fine groceries and wine to Sacramento
since 1947. Rick Mindermann has worked there for more than 30 years.

We headed to the produce section to try out my electric Rotato
Express, which claims to peel perfectly without any waste, just taking
away the skin and no nutritious parts.

"I have my reservations about this little you of yours," Rick said.

It runs off power or batteries; Rick put in some batteries and gathers
produce. Many of the items are seen on the box.

We'll start with an apple. You just center it on the machine, secure
it in there, and press the red button.

"It'll stop automatically, that's amazing," Rick said.

In just seconds, we have a peeled apple.

"It did a great job, but you still have two ends you have to deal with
and you'll need a knife," Rick said.

He tries it on an orange, which has much thicker skin than an apple.

"Houston, we have a problem," Rick said.

It can't quite get through the skin.

But it seems to work on a potato in just seconds. Now, to a kiwi,
which has tough skin: It doesn't seem to cut through it at all.

"I think it's a little too hairy," Rick said.

He cleans the blade and he tries it on a zucchini. It does just fine,
and it also works on a turnip and a tomato.

Now, to an avocado. Halfway down it digs in…

Sure enough, our avocado ends up half-peeled and mushy in the middle.

In the end, Rick says it worked on the thin-skinned apple, tomato,
potato, turnip and zucchini, but not on the thick, tough-skinned
orange, kiwi or avocado.

"If you're going to use it on tangerines or citruses, I wouldn't
bother using it," Rick said.
