Buy It And Try It: Potato Peeler Gloves

Loaves and fishes is an oasis for Sacramento's homeless and hungry.

"This is one of the largest places for homeless people to get a good, hot meal," said Sister Libby Fernandez, Loaves and Fishes Executive Director.

Sister Libby says they serve on average 650 people a day, seven days a week, and they know potatoes. Chef Dawna Barkes normally uses the good old fashioned potato peeler, which can mean some cuts, knicks, and cramped fingers.

Not with the Tater Mitts, which claims to peel a potato in just eight seconds, but does Chef Donna actually believe that?

"I do think it's possible. Anything is possible," said Chef Donna.

It appears there are little blue rocks attached to rubber gloves. The bumpy surface peels the potato.

"I think they're awesome and knobby," said Chef Donna.

We get started. Something the infomercial doesn't say is that you have to cook the potatoes first.

"Let the potatoes boil for approx five to six minutes," said Chef Donna.

So, Into the water they go. Six minutes later, Chef Donna tries it out; vigorously rubbing the potato under cold water. It doesn't take eight seconds, but in 21 seconds, and the potato is peeled!

"I think practicing, it'll go a little quicker," said Chef Donna.

What is Chef Donna's conclusion?

"I think it's awesome. You have to boil the potatoes, not microwave them and you've got a hit," said Chef Donna.

Supposedly to clean the gloves, you just rinse it off and let it dry. We found the gloves at Target Stores for about $17.
