Buy It And Try It: Patch Perfect

It claims to be grass seed on steroids. Let's see if it works.

At the Bing Maloney Golf Course, crews have 27 holes they've got to
keep green year round.

How hard is it to keep the grass green here?  "It's sometimes very
hard," says Chuck Sampson.

Sampson is in charge of tournaments, and he says certain areas of the
course are harder to keep green than others.

"In the shade, high traffic areas," he explains.  "Spots like these we
do all year round."

The Patch Perfect claims it grows anywhere.  Just spread it and forget
it, which would be perfect in a dead spot like this: on the backside
of a green.

It claims to be grass seed on steroids. Is that something they can use
around here?

"We can try it," said Sampson.

First you have to loosen the dirt an inch or two down, and then you
spread the Patch Perfect seed evenly.

We decide to use it over half of this dead area, then use regular
grass seed on the rest.  Then, we'll compare.

Does Sampson think it's going to work? "No," he said.

Why? "Every ground seed I've ever used you've had to turn under and
get under ground."

Which he does on the side with their grass seed.

On Day 11, we return.

And we don't see much progress. With their grass seed, you can see
some blades starting to grow.  Even fewer with the Patch Perfect.

So we return a couple weeks later.  On Day 25, there's much more grass
this time around.

Although it appears their grass seed is growing in faster, the Patch
Perfect side is still spotty.

Finally, we're back on Day 30 to see what Chuck thinks.

"Well, the two grasses grew about the same."

He says both sides grew so much the groundskeepers mowed it. But he
didn't notice a big difference between the two seeds.

"As you can see, there really isn't much difference."

When it says its grass seed on steroids, what do you think?

"I don't think it really is.  I think its normal grass seed.  Didn't
perform better than our regular grass seed," said Sampson.

"It's not worth it."

I bought it online, paid $19.95 plus shipping and handling.  If you
