Buy It And Try It: Fluffy Towel Dryer Balls

Softer, fluffier towels have been the goal of domestic engineers for years. Now, a product with a striking similarity to a kid's toy claims to dry 25% faster, and fluff the towels higher, all without chemicals, saving tons of money on dyer sheets or fabric softener.

We took the Dryer Balls to a health club that goes through almost 5000 towels a day.

"A soft towel is important to the customer, they like it. When we put the towels in the men's locker room, they always kind of feel for a soft one," said Robert Sizelove, Broadstone maintenance.

So we hijacked two loads of towels from their industrial washer, one with the dryer balls, and the other with two dryer sheets.

After 27 minutes, we checked out the dryer-ball load.

"It's a little damp. Just a little bit," said Sizelove.

After the dryer sheet load finishes, after 30 minutes, we fold five towels from each load, just like the picture shows.

"They feel about the same to me," said Sizelove, "the ball's a little bit higher, it looks a towel higher, maybe. You'd probably save in the long run, it works about the same."

So our testers give the dryer ball a green light. Only problem now, keeping the kids from playing with it. The towels felt just as soft, and seemed to fold a bit fluffier. I paid about $10 and bought them online. Some viewers say a tennis ball will do the same thing.
