Businesses Adjusting To Early Wet Weather
SACARAMENTO (CBS13) -- The first storms of the season are impacting local businesses and could even cost some people their jobs.
At Made in the Shade, the rain isn't necessarily a bad thing. The business is scrambling to fill last-minute orders for tents and heaters after the weather took a turn and customers are concerned about their outdoor events
"We're here to cover them," owner Donny Vasquez said. "It's a lot earlier than normal. We usually do have some warmer weather in the beginning of October.
Tony's Firewood is also seeing a rise in sales -- when the temperature dropped...
"I got a half a cord," said customer Wayne Riddlespriger.
But while he prepares to sit cozily next to his fireplace, wedding planners like Becca Smith prepare for nervous brides:
"Oh they're frantic," Smith said. "I mean, constant emails, constant phone calls. They want to hear what your backup plan is."
There's usually an easy fix for that -- seek shelter -- but for outdoor businesses like Scandia miniature golf course, the solution to cold weather isn't so easy...
"Weather affects us of course," said Scandia's Elizabeth Cuevas. "This is the time of year where we get slow and so we've got to cut our work force."
In the last few days, the the miniature golf course and batting cages have been striking out with crowds, forcing managers to consider seasonal layoffs earlier this year.
But they're not yet ready for warm weather's departure -- at least for another weekend:
"The weather forecasters on CBS13 are promising us great sunshine and perfect temperatures," Cuevas said with a green.
The weekend forecast does call for clear skies and temperatures in the mid- to high 70s.
