Burglary Suspect Surrenders To Police On Rooftop Of Natomas Home After Chase
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A burglary suspect with nowhere to run or hide allegedly led police on a wild chase through a Natomas neighborhood before ending up on the roof of a home.
Police say the suspect first broke into a home off Moonstone Avenue in broad daylight, but was scared off when he came face-to-face with a 10-year-old girl. When officers arrived, he led them on a chase, scaling fences and allegedly trying to carjack someone.
"Kind of spooky, because this is a quiet neighborhood," said one resident. "It could have been worse."
Police say the man broke into the home Friday morning, but changed his mind when he noticed the young girl inside.
"He was scaling fences and running across many yards," resident Craig Simmermon said.
Police say they chased the man for about a mile until he ended up at a home off Lyman Circle. A neighbor says the suspect demanded the home owner's car keys.
"The garage door was open and he saw the car in the garage, and he wanted to get away I guess," said Simmermon.
Simmermon says his neighbor didn't give in as police officers moved in and surrounded the home.
"So the guy continues to try and get away. He goes into the house. He jumps out of the window and he stood on this roof here for about an hour and a half, or two hours," said Simmermon.
Police say they eventually got the man down using a ladder from the fire department. The suspect was taken into custody after he went to great lengths and, in this case, great heights in an attempt to get away.
"Times are tough, but you certainly can't rob people to get by and so forth," said Simmermon.
Police have not released the suspect's identity yet because he may be connected to more burglaries in the area.
