Bumgarner Ks Career-High 14 In Giants Loss To Padres

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Madison Bumgarner didn't get the decision in an otherwise dominant performance. A fastball over the plate to San Diego's No. 9 hitter Will Venable in the eighth inning took care of that.

A ball that ricocheted off Hunter Strickland's glove into right field wasn't hit nearly as hard and was even more costly and extended the Giants' struggles at home.

Bumgarner struck out a career-high 14 but was long gone by the time Alexi Amarista singled in the go-ahead run to lead the Padres to a 3-2 win over the Giants in 11 innings Tuesday night.

"That's a tough one to lose," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "Bum threw so well again. That's what makes it tough, to get that kind of pitching and can't come away with a win."

The news didn't get any better after the game for the defending World Series champs.

Bochy revealed that leadoff hitter Nori Aoki - who was a late scratch from the game - had suffered a fractured fibula and will be in a cast for two weeks. Additionally, reliever Sergio Romo was forced out of the game with a hyperextended knee.

It happened on a night that began with such promise for San Francisco.

Bumgarner retired the first 14 hitters he faced, 10 by strikeout. Brandon Crawford dove to catch Yangervis Solarte's liner just before Yonder Alonso blooped a single into right to break up Bumgarner's bid for a perfect game.

Bumgarner allowed two runs on five hits over 7 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out a career-high 14.

"He pitched his heart out," Bochy said.

It didn't matter much after Derek Norris doubled against Strickland (0-1) with one out in the 11th and went to third on Justin Upton's single. Amarista's grounder tipped off Strickland's glove and out of the reach of second basemanJoe Panik, allowing Norris to cross the plate.

"It looked like Joe was going to get it," Bochy said. "If Strick gets it then we have a chance at a double play. They don't score anyway. Bad break there."

Brandon Maurer (5-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the victory while Craig Kimbrel earned his 18th save.

Gregor Blanco beat out a swinging bunt with two outs in the fifth, allowing Matt Duffy to score and Panik followed with a run-scoring double, putting the Giants ahead.

Alonso walked and Will Middlebrooks doubled to open the eighth. After Bumgarner struck out Clint Barmes, Venable doubled in two runs.

"Usually most lefties will swing and miss at that but he got on top of it and slapped it down the line," Bumgarner said. "I don't regret throwing it. It works a lot more often than it don't."

Odrisamr Despaigne cruised through the first four innings and was seemingly out of the fifth but could not cleanly handle Blanco's slow roller in front of the plate.

He had given up one run in his previous 29 1/3 innings against the Giants. Despaigne allowed two runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out two. Duffy, who doubled leading off, was the first runner to advance past first base.

Padres manager Pat Murphy earned his first career ejection, from home plate umpire Fieldin Culbreth, for arguing balls and strikes in the eighth. Matt Kemp was also ejected.

TRAINING TABLE:

Giants: Right-handers Matt Cain (flexor tendon strain) and Jake Peavy (back strain) will each get one more rehab start and will most likely rejoin the Giants on their road trip to Miami and Washington.

Padres: Ian Kennedy (4-5, 5.43) is 2-0 over his last four starts following a four-game losing streak. He's lowered his ERA from 7.15 with a 2.63 ERA during his winning streak. He's faced the Giants twice this season, allowing one run over 9 1-3 innings.

Giants: Ryan Vogelsong (5-5, 4.38) is coming off one of his best starts of the season, a three-hitter over 6 2-3 innings in a 7-0 win at Seattle. He struck out a season-high six. He's still 1-3 over his past four starts, having allowed 12 earned runs over the three losses, a span of 16 1/3 innings.
