Budget Axe May Fall On Sac PD CSI

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Looming budget cuts have stoked fears that the entire crime scene investigation department could be axed in the coming fiscal year.

The City of Sacramento has not released details on what services or departments will bear the brunt of the city's estimated $40 million deficit, but Sacramento Police Department CSI employees fear they could all lose their jobs.

When Local 39 union representatives asked an assistant city manager about the cuts, they were told the information could not be confirmed or denied.

CSI technicians are civilian employees and aren't covered by the sworn officer union contracts, but labor representatives say police officers would likely bear the brunt of their departure, either in additional responsibilities or in sagging criminal convictions.

"How will that impact the cases that come to the D.A.'s office for investigation?" said Local 39 director Joan Bryant.

The Sacramento Police Department is not commenting on the reports.

The police chief's budget proposal to the city council will be happening at the end of this month.
