Brown To Be Sworn In At Memorial Auditorium
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Gov.-elect Jerry Brown will be sworn in next month at Sacramento Memorial Auditorium -- the same place Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took the oath of office four years ago.
The swearing in will take place Jan. 3, with new California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye presiding, Brown's transition team said Wednesday.
The ceremony will be followed by a private afternoon reception at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento's Old Town tourist section.
The auditorium, which holds 3,000 people, was the site of Brown's first post-election budget forum earlier this month. It also is across the street from the loft he and his wife are renting.
Family, friends, supporters and dignitaries will receive invitations to the ceremony in the coming days, Brown spokesman Evan Westrup said. A block of tickets will be set aside for the public.
An inaugural committee has been formed to cover the day's expenses, but Westrup said Brown plans to maintain a lean budget.
The governor-elect has been focusing on California's fiscal problems and said the state faces difficult choices. He has pegged the state budget deficit at more than $28 billion over the next 18 months.
Additional information about the ceremony and party will be announced next week, Westrup said.
This will be Brown's second tenure in the governor's office, after holding the office from 1975-83. He is eligible for the new term because his previous stint came before California voters enacted term limits.
The only other California governor elected to a third term was Republican Earl Warren. He resigned the governor's seat with a little more than a year left in his final term to accept a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court.
