Boy Scouts' 'Perversion Files' List Local Sexual Offenders
DAVIS (CBS13) - A nationwide Boy Scouts of America scandal has been exposed, revealing a decades-old cover-up that protected scoutmasters who allegedly molested children.
More than 1,000 names were revealed Thursday from the scouts' so-called "perversion files."
Some of those names are from the Sacramento region.
CBS13 found one former scout volunteer, registered as a sex offender, living in a quiet Davis neighborhood.
"My immediate reaction is I don't want him to live there," mother Katie Tweltridge said.
The mother was disturbed to discover details about Charles William Robb.
The newly released perversion file says he was booted out of Boy Scouts in 1990, after being accused of molesting children. Unlike some of the other former scout volunteers, who got away with warnings or reprimands, Robb was charged and convicted, and is now a registered sex offender.
"So, we know the number is in the thousands, and many of these people will never ever come out," said Paul Mones, an attorney in the Boy Scout lawsuit.
We tracked down Robb to his Davis home. His father confirmed his son's past from behind the door. It likely would have gone unnoticed, if not for the release of the Boy Scouts' files.
Right across the street from where Robb lives is the Yolo County Library, and just within 500 feet is a school.
Neighbors say police are aware of Robb's proximity to North Davis Elementary School, and it's allowed under the law. Only sex offenders on parole are restricted from living close to schools or playgrounds.
"Am I concerned about it for my kids, no. I generally keep my kids with me; I know where they are," said parent Michelle Millet.
But Tweltridge, with children who go to North Davis, is unsettled. She says it raises a red flag that the Boy Scouts of America was keeping these things secret.
"As parents who are entrusting our children to these men, we deserve a right to know," said Tweltridge.
The documents list more than two dozen people or incidents in Sacramento and the surrounding region, where child sex abuse was suspected.
More files are expected to be released.
