UPDATE: Boy, 3, Dies After Being Hit By Car On Sunrise Boulevard
CITRUS HEIGHTS (CBS13) - A 3-year-old boy died in the hospital after being hit on Sunrise Drive in Citrus Heights on New Year's Eve.
The Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified the boy as Kameron Collins. Kameron had just turned 3 on Nov. 25.
The accident happened at Sunrise and Lawrence Avenue, north of Greenback Lane, at about 5:30 p.m..
"I heard a whole bunch of screeching brakes and everybody just slammed on the their breaks," Linda Terhune said. "Instantly there was like 13 cop cars, two fire trucks and an ambulance and they just came out of nowhere."
Responding Citrus Heights police officers performed CPR at the scene until Sacramento Metro Fire paramedics arrived and the child was rushed to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead there. The boy's name is Kameron Collins.
According to police, Collins was hit by a 2004 Kia traveling south on Sunrise Boulevard at Lawrence. He was walking west from the center median across the southbound lanes of Sunrise when he was hit, police said. It wasn't clear if he was accompanied by an adult or anyone else.
"We are looking at all possibilities," Citrus Heights police Lt. Gary Hendricks said. "It is not just one possibility of what happened here."
Regardless, it's a sad tragedy on a night that should be filled with celebration.
"That's horrible this time of year," Terhune said.
"We are all affected by a tragedy such as this, especially on New Year's Eve," Hendricks said.
The male adult driver was not injured and fully cooperated with the investigation, police said. He was not cited and his name was not released.
As of 8:30 p.m. both directions of Sunrise between Woodmore Oaks Drive and Sun Hill Drive were still closed for the investigation. Investigators are still trying to determine how the toddler ended up in the intersection in the first place.
