Man Kills Himself Inside Modesto Fire Station
MODESTO, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities are evaluating security at a Modesto fire station after a man broke into the building overnight and killed himself as firefighters slept.
The Modesto Bee reports that the man apparently entered the fire station through a window on the west side of the building early Monday morning. Firefighters who had been sleeping in a room on the station's east side discovered the body around 6:30 a.m.
The man has not been identified, and the motive for the suicide is unclear.
Modesto police officials said firefighters at the station reported hearing at least one gunshot around 3 a.m. but dismissed it because gunshots are common in the area.
Police Sgt. Brian Findlen says the incident raises security concerns at the station.
