Big Wake Weekend Promises Family Fun, Thrill Of High-Speed Races

GRANITE BAY (CBS13) - As the hot summer temperatures begin to settle in this weekend, cool down on the shores of Folsom Lake and enjoy the excitement of hydroplanes racing across the waters at speeds of 200 mph.

Billed as "California's premier beach picnic and party," the Big Wake Weekend Powered By Toyota -- running from May 31 to June 2 -- is a three-day festival in Granite Bay, which will feature the return of H1 Unlimited races in the Sacramento area after a 46-year absence.

The race series features some of the fastest boats in the world, running average lap speeds between 130 mph to 165 mph. The first stateside race of the season is a return to Folsom Lake since the national championships in 1967.

The family event also features the wakeboarding stunts of the Hyperlite Experience, the American Power Boat Association championship race series, as well as various exhibitions and live bands around the themed beer gardens.

Perhaps one of the more intriguing attractions off the race course is the Jetlevving. The water pressure device worn like a backpack allows users to skim across the lake's water or shoot 30 feet up into the air.
